Upcoming 2021 Interior Designs trends — All you have to know for your home decor, by architect Angie Ricart

Trends in interior design are constantly changing and evolving —much like they do in the fashion industry— and sometimes it feels like it’s hard to catch up. With the year coming to a close, we got together with Angie Ricart of The Almost Basic Co. to discuss some upcoming trends for 2021 and how we can adapt our spaces without having to completely renovate them.

EC: Tell us a little bit about yourself! How did you get into Interior Design? What’s your personal style like? interior design trends 2021

AR: Ever since I was a kid I’ve been interested in the arts. I tried a lot of creative fields and ended up studying Architecture, which later on made me realize I had a passion for details on a smaller scale, which led me to Interior Design.

I work with many styles, I don’t like putting myself in a box since it really varies depending on the client, the project and the experience and feeling we want to create for the place we are designing. I am super passionate about creating commercial spaces, because the final client is multiple people, the impact is bigger, and the freedom is usually bigger, as well. On residential projects, I love creating spaces for wellness inside the home, cozy areas, spaces for people who like to host and spend time in a comfortable room.

EC: Can you tell us about The Almost Basic Co.?

AR: The Almost Basic Company started as a necessity, as a company where I could formalize all my design endeavours and serve the clients that were coming in. We’ve been in Miami for over 4 years now and working in both Commercial, Hospitality and Residential projects.

EC: What are some trends that you think might be coming up next year?

AR: We are leaving behind the “minimal” look, and I am loving that! More color, more texture, more patterns are being incorporated to interiors that add more dimension to the space.

There’s also an emphasis on natural light and higher ceilings.

Pro tip: if you have a low ceiling, you can use high gloss stretch ceilings to create a virtual double height on your space — a dramatic change! And talking about ceilings, you can also take the concept of an “accent wall” to the ceilings; adding texture, colors, wallpapers, tiles or prints to them.

EC: Are there any color palettes that have been trendy lately?

AR: The warm comforting hues are going to be big in 2021, and we are already seeing this trend now. Earthy tones are great, anything that brings a sense of warmth and nostalgia to your space.

EC: Are there any trends you think clients should avoid?

AR: The over-use of white and lack of personality in a space. I completely understand the concept of having a clean space and peace of mind, but if you over-do it you could turn the space into a cold and uninviting room, and no one wants that!

EC: What are some trends you personally enjoy?

AR: Biophilic Design! Incorporating nature elements to every space - whether it is on plants, sounds, light, images, textures and materials, it brings us into connection with everything and helps keep us grounded.

EC: How can people keep up with the ever-changing trends without having to completely renovate their spaces after a couple of years?

AR: We need to make sure that we invest in pieces that we love - pieces that are durable and that are not so “trendy”. It’s like fashion: get your staples and basics in good quality, and the statement pieces can be less essential to a room and more affordable. That way that you can (if you desire) easily change them and mix them up. Also, be sure that you are going for a style that you really enjoy and that you actually like, not just because it’s on trend.
