How To Make Minimalist Interior Design Work

Minimalist interior design has been a trend for a very long time, ever since the late 90s. It has never really faded from the zeitgeist, especially because of how easy it is to make it withstand different style changes. It’s probably the simplest way to keep your space devoid of current trends.

Why should you choose minimalism for your space?

  • It’s easier to relax when you live in a well-designed and clutter-free space. Your senses aren’t overwhelmed with useless decoration.
  • They can make smaller spaces appear larger!
  • Minimalist spaces usually don’t go out of style.
  • It’s extremely easy to make a space minimalistic and it doesn’t require a big investment.

The reason why minimalism is hard to get right is that many people don’t understand the concepts behind it, and just think that white walls and sparse furniture will be enough to create a minimalist space. Well, here we’re going to analyze the different aspects of minimalist design so you can get it right.

  1. Pick one accent color: Minimalism isn’t meant to be colorful! Minimalistic spaces are mostly white (or off-white) with grey or beige as accent colors. If you want to add some actual color to it, make it muted.
  2. Keep the space uncluttered, not empty: This is a problem that most people seem to have. The goal behind minimalism is to keep a space clean, with simple furniture. This doesn't mean that rooms should be empty. No one wants echoey living rooms with no flair.
  3. Everything should be functional: Everything should add value to the space! Minimalism doesn’t support useless centerpieces or overwhelming walls filled with art pieces. Everything in the space should be there for a reason, be it lighting, storage, places to sit. No “tchotchkes” allowed in Minimalism!
  4. Use pure geometrical shapes: Minimalism is about straight lines, smooth curves, simple shapes, and flat planes. So, stay away from complicated pieces of furniture!
  5. Find focal points: Minimalism means keeping furniture and decoration simple so that something else can be the actual main character of a space! This could be the view from outside the window, a chandelier, a special piece of art. By keeping the rest of the room relatively simple you can ensure that the attention won’t stray away from your focal point.
