What is Scandinavian Interior Design?

Scandinavian design is all the rage right now, and for good reason: it's easy to achieve, and not just because you can just thrift pieces or get them for cheap in Ikea. If you want to achieve the look of a Scandinavian interior, there are only two things you need: a wooly rug and wooden furniture.

The Nordic approach to interior design is all about balance and simplicity. That means the first step is decluttering your space. Start by taking everything off your walls—pack up your art prints and try to keep your accessorizing to a minimum.

  • First of all, let's talk about color. Scandinavian design tends to rely on a smaller palette, usually of about three colors that are neutral and complement each other well. First, you want to start with a crisp, white background. Paint the walls of your space white, and then make sure that all the other elements you bring into the room are neutral in color. The whites will brighten up the room, while the neutrals will help to add dimension and texture—without distracting from its chill vibe.

  • Next up: furniture! We all know what an Ikea staple looks like—clean lines and a light wood finish are key here. If you're going for the full Scandinavian look, think about getting a low-to-the-ground bed or sofa; this will make the room feel larger and more open.

  • As far as decor goes? Go minimalistic! A few simple pieces of art can go a long way—you could even draw some yourself! In addition to the widely known benefits of having plants around (cleaner air, less stress, etc.), they can also make your space feel more open and bright. With a couple of plants, you'll be well on your way to a nordic interior design!

  • Finally: lighting! In Scandinavian design, it's important to have plenty of natural light streaming, but it’s also important to have plenty of artificial lighting. To create ambiance, use dimmers! We all know how important it is to layer our lighting so we can adjust the level according to our moods or activities. At Eco Ceiling we can install dimmable lighting, so you can control the intensity of your lighting at all times.
