Twelve ways to put light in the ceiling plane instead of on it. We bend the profiles, print the membrane, and install the finished surface ourselves.

Most integrated lighting arrives as a product. A tile, a panel, a module in a fixed size, and the ceiling gets drawn around it. We work the other way around. The lit surface is fabricated for the room. Any outline, curved or flat, ceiling or wall, up to the seam limits of the membrane. Our aluminum profiles are bent on our own CNC in Dania Beach, so the shape on the reflected ceiling plan is the shape that gets built. There is no module grid to design around and no standard size to compromise to.

That changes what a ceiling can do. One surface can be printed and backlit at the same time. It can be acoustic and lit at once, using acoustical fabric or micro perforated PVC membrane, where the perforation is invisible from the floor. A single plane can carry a recessed light line, a perimeter cove, a star field and a tunable white field, in one finish, from one drawing set, installed by one crew. The twelve systems below are how we categorize the work. Most real projects combine two or three of them. On large commercial projects we build a physical mockup first, so you can see it before you commit.

Why it works

Light built into the surface, not fixed to it

The shape is drawn, not selected

The membrane is cut for the room and the aluminum is bent on our own CNC in Dania Beach. Any outline, curved or flat, ceiling or wall, up to the seam limits of the membrane. No module grid to design around, and no standard size to compromise to.

One surface, more than one job

A single plane can be printed and backlit at once, or acoustic and lit at once. The same plane can carry a recessed light line, a perimeter cove, a star field and a tunable white field, in one finish and from one drawing set.

Everything above the membrane, from driver to LED, is low voltage.

Fixed at 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, 5000K or 6500K. Tunable white runs 2700K to 6500K. RGBW where the design calls for color, with a dedicated white channel so the ceiling still reads as a real white ceiling when the color is off.

Wireless control where it is specified. Tunable white is a preference setting on the control system. We make no health, wellness or circadian claim for it.
Driver access
An accessible location, agreed at design stage
A closet, above a cabinet, or behind an access hatch. Decide this at design stage, not at rough-in. We mark it on the drawing.
Membrane
Roughly 8 mil PVC nominal
7 to 10 mil depending on finish. Gloss, matte, satin, translucent and mirror.
CLIPSO fabric
Knit polyester and PU, about 230 g/m2
Clipped in cold and dry, seamless up to 16 ft 8 in. The acoustic version passes sound through a micro perforation that is invisible in the finished surface, not a visible hole pattern.
Light transmission
42.0% diffused
Translucent membrane, 42.0% diffused. Transparent membrane, 70.5%, which we do not use for backlit work because the diodes read through. Measured at Poznan University of Technology, method per CIE 130-1998. This is a test report, not a certificate.
Surface burning characteristics
ASTM E84, tested per finish
Gloss FSI 5 / SDI 300, matte FSI 10 / SDI 300, satin FSI 15 / SDI 250 (flame spread / smoke developed). White specimens. The laboratory assigned no classification. The specimens were membrane only, not mounted as a finished ceiling assembly. Not permitted in return air plenums on the data we hold. If the space above the membrane is a return air plenum, tell us early and we will design the cavity around it.

What specifiers ask us first

What is a backlit stretch ceiling?

A backlit stretch ceiling is a tensioned translucent membrane held in an extruded aluminium track, with LED light bars mounted on carriers in the cavity above it. The membrane diffuses the light so the whole plane glows evenly, with no visible fixture, no diode dots and no hot spots. Because the membrane is cut for the room and the profile is bent to the drawing, the lit area can be any outline at all rather than a grid of standard panels: rectangles, circles, freeform curves, or a shape that runs from the ceiling down a wall in one piece. The translucent membrane we use for backlit work transmits 42.0% diffused, measured at Poznan University of Technology, method per CIE 130-1998. That figure comes from a test report, not a certificate, and covers total transmission only. The membrane itself is roughly 8 mil PVC and can be unclipped for access without damaging it.

How deep does the cavity need to be?

Four inches minimum between the LED plane and the finished membrane. That depth is what lets the light from each bar spread and overlap before it reaches the membrane, so the surface reads as one even plane instead of a row of bright stripes. Shallower cavities are possible, but they need the LED rows moved closer together, which raises both cost and heat, so we would rather design the ceiling around the depth you actually have than promise an even surface we cannot deliver. Drivers are not in the cavity at all. They sit somewhere accessible that is agreed at design stage and marked on the drawing, which means nothing has to be serviced above the membrane later. Tell us the available depth early and we will set the LED spacing and the profile to suit it.

What control systems does it work with?

Everything above the membrane is 24V constant voltage, from the driver to the LED. The systems run on 0-10V, DALI-2 and DMX, and on wireless control where the project specifies it. Fixed colour temperature is available at 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, 5000K or 6500K. Tunable white runs the full 2700K to 6500K range as a preference setting on the control system, and we make no health, wellness or circadian claim for it. RGBW is available where the design calls for colour, with a dedicated white channel so the ceiling still reads as a real white ceiling when the colour is off. Strips are rated CRI 90 and above by their manufacturer, and we name the exact product on your submittal so you can check the rating against the source. Send us your driver and control combination and we will confirm it against jobs we have run, and we will send the manufacturer photometric data for the named product.

How wide can the ceiling go without a seam?

It depends on the material. CLIPSO knit polyester is clipped in cold and dry and is seamless up to 16 feet 8 inches, so most rooms are covered in a single piece with no join anywhere in the finished surface. It weighs about 230 grams per square metre, and the acoustic version passes sound through a micro perforation that is invisible from the floor rather than a visible hole pattern. PVC membrane is roughly 8 mil nominal, between 7 and 10 mil depending on whether the finish is gloss, matte, satin, translucent or mirror. Wider PVC spans are welded in our own shop before they reach site, so the weld is made under factory conditions rather than overhead on a ladder. Either way the seam position is decided at drawing stage and marked on the reflected ceiling plan, so nobody discovers a join in the middle of a finished lobby.
