7 things that make your house look dated

We all know that decorating is a huge part of home ownership. After all, it's not just about what you've got—it's about how you use it. But sometimes we get stuck in our ways, and we start to take for granted the things we've always had around us. It's easy to forget that a few small updates can make a big difference in how your place feels.

Here are some common things that make your space look outdated:

Carpet

If you haven't replaced yours in the last couple of years, it's time to do it! Did you know that homeowners with carpets tend to get less value out of their homes when they sell them? It might seem practical, but they’re definitely not the prettiest floor finish.

Popcorn ceiling

Popcorn ceilings were all the rage in the 60s and 70s, but they’re definitely not trendy right now. Many people want to get rid of their dated ceilings, but they can’t, because they contain cancerous asbestos. The easiest solution is to get a stretch ceiling! We can get it installed on your roof in just two days.

Patterned sofas or chairs

Patterned furniture makes a room look dated very quickly. If your sofa has patterns or colors that don't match other elements in the room (especially flower patterns), consider swapping them out for something simpler or more cohesive. This can be as easy as buying a new slipcover for an existing piece of furniture.

Doilies

These things are so cute, but they can also be a little bit dated. If you want to bring a fresh feel to your space, try removing doilies from the shelves and tables and replacing them with modern decor pieces like candles or vases.

Oak cabinets

Honey oak cabinets were popular in the 1950s. If you have these cabinets in your kitchen, consider replacing them with something more modern and fresh. Try painting over your honey oak cabinets with a bold color—like red or orange—to give yourself a new look without spending much money or time.

Dark wood paneling

When it comes to wood paneling, darker tones tend to feel more dated than lighter ones. Unless you're trying to recreate an old library or Victorian home office, stick with lighter tones! Paint over dark wood paneling with white paint (or another light color)—it's an easy way to give a room an instant facelift!

Linoleum floors

Linoleum floors are another thing from the past—they're squeaky, they're hard to clean, and they just look boring! If you have linoleum floors in your home, consider replacing them with something else.
